The Kaduna Refining and Petrochemicals Company (KRPC), has decried activities of host communities who illegally tap into its water pipes.

13-kilometer water pipeline from the water intake that run through Janruwa, Ungwan Maigero, Mahuta and Kamazo communities along Ibrahim Yakowa New Roadto the refinery.

Presenting a paper titled "KRPC Operational Status and Readiness for Autonomy," Shehu Malami, Executive Director Operations, EDO, KRPC, at the two-Day 4th Edition of the Energy Correspondents on Saturday, in Kaduna, said apart from using the water illegally the company is losing between 70 cubic liters of water every hour due to the illegal activities of the communities around its water pipelines. He said the illegal activities have been going on for over 10 years.

"So far, we have established that we are losing between 60 and 70 million cubic liters of water per hour. If you follow Kamazo road (Yakowa New Road), it is like all the car wash, shops on that street and almost all the houses live on our water.

“Though, we are not saying that the state government should demolish their houses unless they are on the right of way. We are trying to get the Kaduna State government to help us,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, Comrade Garba Muhammad, Chairman of the Kaduna Council of the NUJ,urged the media to rise against the oil sector saboteurs by focusing attention on the activities of pipeline vandals by investigating and exposing their sponsors in order to overcome the problem.

“We are not unaware of the current challenges facing the Oil sector in Nigeria, especially the senseless attacks on oil installations by the so-called Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).

“I want to urge the media to rise against oil sector saboteurs by focusing attention on the activities of thesevandals by investigating and exposing their sponsors in order to overcome the problem,” he said.
