In a moment that has electrified hearts across Nigeria and inspired youth across Africa, Dr. Reason Ebubechukwu Onya, a 22-year-old student from Ekpeye Kingdom in Rivers State, emerged as the top graduate at Russia’s prestigious I.M. Sechenov University, earning a perfect GPA of 5.0 and receiving the coveted Gold Medal for academic brilliance.
The university, established in 1758 and named after renowned philosopher Ivan Mikhailovich Sechenov, described Dr. Onya as a “genius” for achieving straight A’s in all his medical courses, a feat rarely attained in the institution’s long history.
Delivering the valedictory speech, the young Nigerian said his success was a product of unrelenting effort, support from loved ones, and the belief that resilience transforms trials into triumph:
“Today marks the culmination of sleepless nights, hours of study and clinical rotations. It is not in vain—because the experiences that break us also build us up,” he said, standing before an audience of global peers and distinguished academics.
Dr.Ebubechukwu Onya dedicated his achievement to his parents—Dr. Reason Onya, a former Rivers State Commissioner of Urban Development and Physical Planning in Rivers State and Political Economist, presently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Political Science, Rivers State University, Nkpolu, PortHarcourt and Dr. (Mrs) Obianma Nneka Onya, a Chief Consultant Physician of Family Medicine Department and pioneer Director of Lifestyle Clinic, University of PortHarcourt Teaching Hospital,—crediting them for instilling values of courage and perseverance.
“You are the wind beneath my wings,” he told them. “Your footsteps laid the path I now walk. I am so grateful to continue your legacy.”
In a stirring moment that resonated far beyond the ceremony, he turned to young people watching around the world:
“To the young boy or girl in Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Egypt—thinking, ‘That looks nice, but I guess it’s not for me’—I want you to know this: Nothing is above you. Nobody is your better. You are the best.”
The graduate also praised his classmates and professors, describing their guidance and support as instrumental in shaping both his intellect and character.
Dr. Onya’s story is already being hailed as a powerful symbol of what Nigerian youth can achieve on the global stage. As he embarks on his journey as a medical professional, he urged his peers to see this moment not as a conclusion, but as a springboard for a lifetime of impact:
“Let this not be the peak of our achievements, but the stepping stone for greatness.” His rise stands as a compelling chapter in Nigeria’s evolving narrative—a reminder that brilliance can bloom even in the face of adversity, and that the world is watching. (The Guardian)
