CP Adewale Ajao, FCT Commissioner of Police
Amid rising concerns over the spate of criminal activities in the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched a major operation to tackle the menace of “one-chance” robberies and other security threats across Abuja.
The initiative, which began on Monday, is part of an intelligence-led strategy aimed at curbing criminal activities and ensuring the safety of residents, especially following disturbing incidents over the past weekend.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Command said it would intensify stop-and-search operations at key flashpoints, focusing on suspected “one-chance” operators, vandals, and scavengers who have been linked to a surge in petty and violent crimes.
She said, “In view of recent security concerns within the Federal Capital Territory, particularly over the past weekend, the FCT Police Command on Monday, 7th July 2025, activated a robust and intelligence-led operational strategy aimed at tackling criminal elements and ensuring the continued safety of residents.
“As part of these efforts, the Command will intensify stop-and-search operations at key flashpoints, targeting individuals involved in ‘one-chance’ robberies, vandalism, and the activities of scavengers who pose a growing security threat.”
Adeh also said the operation would include clamping down on unauthorised persons using diplomatic plate numbers to commit crime and evade law enforcement.
She warned residents against driving cars with covered or missing number plates, or those displaying only a single plate.
The operation will also clamp down on unauthorised persons using diplomatic plate numbers to commit crimes and evade law enforcement.

Members of the public are strongly advised to avoid driving vehicles with covered number plates, vehicles without number plates, or those bearing only one plate. ”
Adeh also reminded residents with tinted vehicle windows to carry valid tinted permits, adding that law enforcement officers would rigorously enforce compliance during the operation.
While acknowledging the potential inconvenience the new measures may cause, the Command appealed for public understanding and cooperation, emphasising that the move is in the best interest of public safety.
“The FCT Police Command remains committed to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property and will continue to do everything within its power to safeguard all residents,” Adeh said.
She urged the public to remain law-abiding, patient, and supportive as the operation unfolds. (The PUNCH)
