Scene of the accident
Three young women involved in a serious road accident on Kingsway Road in Ikoyi, Lagos, early Tuesday morning reportedly sustained severe head injuries and faced a significant delay in ambulance response, forcing an eyewitness to transport them to the General Hospital, Lagos, in a private vehicle.
The Incident sparked concern over the state of emergency services in Lagos, with an eyewitness lamenting the perceived decline in response times.
“Very sad!”, an eyewitness, Agboola Kotun, recounted the ordeal in a Facebook post with photos early on Tuesday.
According to Kotun’s account, the accident occurred just hours before his post, involving three young ladies. Two of them suffered “very severe head injuries.”
Kotun, alongside a paramedic who was also at the scene, immediately administered first aid while awaiting the arrival of a supposedly state-owned ambulance.
However, the wait proved to be protracted. “Unfortunately, after one and half hours of waiting, I had to use my vehicle to convey them to General Hospital, Lagos,” Kotun stated in his post.
He added, “The urgency of the situation was underscored by the swift arrival of the husband of one of the injured ladies. An American-trained Urologist who had recently relocated to Lagos, he reportedly made it from Arepo to the General Hospital in less than thirty minutes to meet them.”
Kotun’s post drew a sharp contrast between the current state of emergency services and previous administrations.
Worried by the incident, Facebook users had mixed reactions to Kotun’s post, some commended him as a ‘Doctor,’ while others stressed the need for timely responses on Lagos roads.
A Facebook user, Omoba Surakat Olabode Oteshade-Eshilokun, commended Kotun for his intervention towards saving the lives of the young ladies: “Well done brother ? thank you for saving their lives Almighty God will be there for you whenever you don’t expect anybody insh’allah Bikudrah-tullah. Aamin. Thank you once again baba.”
Another user, Mojisola Allison wrote, “Weldone Doctor, may Allah reward you for saving lives ? Lagos State Health sector needs serious intervention urgently.”
Also writing on Kotun’s Facebook page, another user, Afilaka Bidemi, said, “Babajide Kolade-otitoju, please sir, you need to look into this!!!!! We have been raising our voices in recent times. We need those ambulances back on our roads.”
