The Sokoto State Government has called on Bello Turji to demonstrate sincere commitment to the peace process by releasing all kidnapped victims in his custody and immediately halting attacks on rural communities.

Retired Col. Ahmed Usman, the Special Adviser to Gov. Ahmed Aliyu on Security, made the appeal in a statement issued to journalists in Sokoto on Sunday.

Usman’s call followed the circulation of a viral audio message on social media in which Turji expressed willingness to embrace peace, and urged fellow bandit leaders to open up to dialogue.

Describing Turji’s remarks as a potential step toward ending violence in the region, Usman stressed that such words must be backed by tangible actions.

“If Turji is genuinely committed to peace, he must prove it by ending all forms of violence and unconditionally releasing innocent civilians being held hostage,” he said.

The adviser reaffirmed that the safety and welfare of rural residents remained a top priority for the administration of Aliyu.

“There can be no genuine dialogue while communities continue to live in fear and captivity. Peace begins with concrete steps that build trust,” Usman stated.

He reiterated the government’s readiness to support any credible peace initiative that ensures lasting security in the state but emphasised that criminality will not be tolerated under any guise.

Usman also called on stakeholders, including community leaders, civil society organisations, and religious institutions, to rally behind efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.

He urged Turji and other armed actors to seize this opportunity by completely ending violence and ensuring the safe return of all abducted individuals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that on June 19, the Sokoto State Government reaffirmed its commitment to peace and security, expressing its willingness to engage in dialogue with any armed group ready to lay down their arms and embrace reconciliation. (NAN)
