Kidnapped Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro
By SANDRA UMEH
The Nigerian Law Society (NLS) has called on security agencies to intensify efforts for the immediate release of a Judge of the Bayelsa State Judiciary, Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, who was recently abducted by unidentified gunmen.
This is contained in a statement by the President of the society, Mr Mela Nunghe (SAN), on Sunday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court was reportedly abducted in the Ekeki suburb of Yenagoa, the state capital, on June 21.
“The NLS is deeply disturbed, saddened, and strongly condemn the abduction of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa State Judiciary.
“This unfortunate incident is a gross violation of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) and poses a threat to democracy, democratic principles, the rule of law, and justice in our country.
“We unequivocally demand his immediate release and call on the relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action to secure his release and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The safety and security of our judges are paramount to the effective administration of justice and the maintenance of public trust in our institutions,” he said.
Nunghe also urged the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect the judiciary and uphold the rule of law, ensuring that those responsible for this dastardly act were held accountable.
“We stand in solidarity with Justice Omukoro’s family, colleagues, and the entire judiciary. We also pray for his safe and speedy release,” he added. (NAN)
