SL Benfica and Chelsea FC set up a Round-of-16 showdown at the FIFA Club World Cup™. The former edged FC Bayern München, who will now take on CR Flamengo in the first knockout round, while the latter eliminated Espérance. Elsewhere, some part-timers penned the fairy tale of this tournament. Auckland City FC indeed – against the six-time South American champions CA Boca Juniors, the ear-splitting noise of the Xeneizes in the stands and astronomical odds – pulled off one of the biggest shocks in club football history.

Auckland FC 1-1 CA Boca Juniors

Group C GEODIS Park, Nashville Edinson Cavani and Co went all-out for the huge victory they required to give themselves a shot at going through. A full-time student and an aspiring school teacher nevertheless combined to give Boca a lesson they, or the sport, will never forget. Nathan Garrow and Christian Gray are the toast of a club, a nation and a region.

SL Benfica 1-0 FC Bayern München

Group C Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte The Eagles looked down and out halfway through their opener. A courageous comeback, a merciless mauling and a sizeable upset later and they are not just in the last 16, but there as section conquerors.

LAFC 1-1 CR Flamengo

Group D Camping World Stadium, Orlando

Denis Bouanga got the Black and Gold their first goal and point at this event. It looked to have snatched victory, only for 20-year-old Wallace Yan to clinically equalise for the already-through Mengão.

Espérance 0-3 Chelsea FC

Group D Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia

Liam Delap opened his Blues account as they cruised past the outmatched Tunisians. If the mood was downcast following defeat to Flamengo, Enzo Maresca’s side now have a navigable route into the semi-finals. (FIFA.COM)
