Gov Monday Okpebholo
By USMAN ALIYU
Cocoa farmers in Marindoti Community, Ovia South West LGA of Edo, on Sunday urged Gov. Monday Okpebholo to deploy soldiers urgently to their camps.
Their renewed plea follows a February attack on seven communities, which reportedly claimed 27 lives and left 34 others seriously wounded.
In a letter via their lawyers, Osagie Obayuwana & Co., Dr Osagie Obayuwana, praised the governor’s donation of N20 million and a trailer of rice.
“The leadership and members of the community remember with gratitude the governor’s comforting words during his visit.
“They expressed hope in the governor’s promise of support, which they acknowledged he had admirably fulfilled,” Obayuwana said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that brutal violence struck Marindoti Community on Feb. 22, affecting several forest reserve camps.
The attacks, allegedly by Ijaw militants, left widespread destruction and fear across the Eto, Dele, Dikpe, Taiye Osikolobi, Ajagba, and Ogwilaba camps.
Survivors have since lived in constant fear, prompting the latest call for improved security presence in the area.
According to Obayuwana, Governor Okpebholo promised to deploy soldiers to the region to deter future attacks.
The community has pledged its support by offering accommodation for the deployed soldiers.
A block of the abandoned primary school has been upgraded to house the military personnel.
“A borehole has been installed, along with fans, mattresses, improved toilets and kitchens, and a generator for electricity,” the lawyer said.
He added that the facility can comfortably accommodate at least 30 soldiers stationed in the area.
“With preparations complete, the farmers are now urging the governor to deploy the promised troops without delay.
“They are now ready and counting on the governor to fulfil this vital security arrangement,” Obayuwana stated.
He noted that beyond material support, the farmers also praised the governor for his inclusive leadership and unifying message during his visit.
“Edo, under his leadership, remains home for all people without discrimination.
“Our clients deeply value your counsel and affirm their continued prayers for you,” he said. (NAN)
