The Kano zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has launched an investigation following the arrest of two men allegedly found with $899,800 in counterfeit currency.
In a statement on X on Saturday, the commission said the suspects were arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency along Maiduguri road in Wudil, Kano.
The anti-graft agency added that the duo were traveling in a commercial Golf 3 car on their way to Kila village in Gwaram LGA of Jigawa state.
?Upon search, the NDLEA team discovered the suspected fake notes concealed inside a Maggi Star seasoning carton. The suspects and exhibits were subsequently handed over to the EFCC for further investigation,? the statement reads.
The suspects, identified as Abubakar Hussaini and Sahabi Adamu, are currently in EFCC custody.
?Preliminary findings revealed that the suspects were transporting the counterfeit currency to Kila Village to meet one Muhammad Walo, who was to introduce them to Mallam Mashiru, a self-proclaimed spiritualist claiming to be capable of ?transforming? counterfeit dollars into genuine currency through ritual prayers,? the statement added.
The EFCC said the suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations. (The PUNCH)
