Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has disclosed that 159 companies earlier suspended for illegal mining have been cleared to resume operations immediately.
Immediately after the temporary suspension of mining five months ago, Mutfwang signed Executive Order 001 temporarily suspending mining activities in all 17 local government areas in the state.
The governor, who was briefing journalists on Friday, added that the decision to suspend the activities was not aimed at hurting or denying the loyal and industrious citizens of their legitimate sources of livelihood.
He said that he Is aware that Plateau State has been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s mining history since 1902, adding that the emergence of large-scale mining on the Plateau served as a catalyst for economic growth, industrial development, job creation, foreign exchange earnings, and infrastructural expansion.
“Today, many households in one state depend on mining to survive. However, three months ago, we recognized the urgent need to intervene, to bring about reforms, enhance security, and restore human dignity to our communities. That intervention was not only timely, it was necessary.
“It is particularly heartbreaking to observe how many of our young people have abandoned their education to engage in artisanal mining. The unfortunate trend has exposed them to exploitation, drug abuse, prostitution, and threatening health risks,” he added.
Mutfwang said that as a responsible and compassionate government, they could not fold their arms and watch that continue, pointing out that they resolved to stop the disturbing trajectory by introducing a fair and sustainable system, “a win-win model that ensures mining activities benefit all.
In this circumstance, he said, the Federal Government, the Plateau State Government, and most importantly, the host communities.
“Our goal is to empower, not exploit, to build, not to destroy. Remember, the ban remains in effect. Only those cleared by the Technical Committee set up by the government are allowed to resume operations.
“These include “Co mining Licenses, 15 Small Scale Mining Leases, 15 Exploration Licenses, 5 Artisanal and Small Scale Mining permits, one Quarry lease and 118 Tin Sheds/ Buying Centers.”
The governor made himself clear by warning that any operator or individual who had not been cleared by the committees must stay away from all mining sites. (The Guardian)
