Against the background of the high and rising incidents of Anaemia prevalent among pregnant and lactating Nigerian mothers, a Nigerian NGO, Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation (VOHF), recently visited major public health facilities in Imo State, South-East Nigeria.
The visit which took place on May 16, 2025, was part of the NGO's commitments to creating and raising public health awareness and ensuring maintenance of required health standards among health care facilities across the sub-Saharan Africa health care landscape, particularly in Nigeria.
The visit saw the group at the Owerri Municipal Health Center, where both new and expectant mothers were educated and sensitized on Anemia, touching on its tell-tale signs, treatments and prevention protocols, and the need to imbibe good, healthy eating habits in the family and community.
Anemia, a condition where there is low hemoglobin and red blood cells in the body of sufferers, has been declared a public health concern in Nigeria with over 50% of pregnant women suffering from it.
It has over the years contributed very significantly to both morbidity and mortality amongst both pregnant and lactating mothers in the country.
According to Victoria Oyiya, the Visioneer/Cordinator, Victoria Oyiya Health Foundation (VOHF), "the non-profit making organization with teams across various states of Nigeria has as its vision the promotion of good health through community outreaches to schools, health centres, communities, organizations etc."
VOHF also helps to connect individuals with specific health care professionals and health care favilities nationwide, focusing on illness prevention, healthy living and prevention of disease complications.
They have successfully "organized outreaches across various states of the federation in malaria prevention, menstrual hygiene, drug abuse and addictions prevention etc. touching and impacting hundreds of lives, while also maintaining an active social media presence which they also use for health awareness and education," Oyiya informed.
Donations were later made to the mothers who expressed gratitude to the VOHF team on ground.
