No fewer than two operatives of the Nigeria Police Force attached with the Force Intelligence Department ? Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) have sustained serious injuries following an attack on them by a mob.
It was learnt that the officers were attacked at Okhuimwun Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State on Monday while coming from Lagos en route Benin, the State capital for an official assignment.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the cops encountered a group of people in their hundreds at the road immediately after the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis, where the mob blocked the road.
According to them, the intelligence officers were descended with stones, sticks and other dangerous objects, inflicting serious injuries on two police personnel.
Reacting to the incident, the police high command described the mob action as ?provocative and unlawful?, adding that despite the action, the officers exercised restraint by not resorting to the use of force against the citizens.
The Force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, disclosed that the injured officers are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.
He said, ?The mob, in an unlawful display of aggression, descended on the officers with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects, inflicting serious injuries on two police personnel.
???It is noteworthy that despite the provocation and threat to life, the officers exercised commendable restraint by not resorting to the use of force. The injured officers are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.?
Adejobi said the force has commenced investigations against the ?unlawful? attack against its personnel, and those found culpable would be made to face wrath of the law.
??The Nigeria Police Force warns against acts of lawlessness and unprovoked aggression against its personnel who are committed to maintaining law and order and hereby assure the public that investigations have commenced, and appropriate legal actions will be taken against those found culpable,? he added.
