Court of Appeal upholds use of hijab in Lagos State public schools

A Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has reversed the ban on the use of hijab (Muslims head-scarf) for students in public primary and secondary schools in the state.

The five-man panel declared in a unanimous judgment on Thursday that the ban was discriminatory against Muslim pupils in the state.

On October 17, 2014, a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja had banned the use of hijab in Lagos State public primary and secondary schools.

Scores of Muslim Students had stormed the office of then Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to protest the ban.

The protesting student had described the move as a victimisation of their religion

Giving its ruling, the court had said the ban was to preserve the secular nature of the state institutions.

However, with the ban reversed, female students are now allowed to put on Hijab with their school uniforms. (TV360 Nigeria)
