By PATIENCE YAKUBU
A 37-year-old woman, Martha Dauda, who allegedly beat up her landlady over water bill, was arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates? Court on Thursday.
The defendant, who is of Karji Kaduna, is facing a two-count charge of assault and causing hurt.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the Court that the defendant committed the offences at about 9:00 a.m., at her residence on May 12.
Leo said the matter was reported by one Linda Julius of the same address with the defendant at Karji Police Station, Kaduna.
He said that the complainant went to the defendant?s flat to collect money for water bill, which she refused to pay for the past three months.
The prosecutor said that instead of giving the complainant the money, the defendant descended on her, slapped and punched her on her left eye.
He said that before the defendant beat up the complainant, she called her all kinds of unprintable names, adding that as a result of the beating, the complainant sustained serious injuries.
Leo said that the complainant was rescued by some tenants, who were at home when the altercation ensued.
He said the offences contravened Section 356 and 284 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
?Section 356 attracts a prison term of not less than three years while Section 284 attracts a prison term of not less than five years,? he said.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
He said that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and must show evidence of tax payment to Kaduna State Government for three years.
Emanuel adjourned the case until June 19, for hearing. (NAN)
