A protest was held in Abuja on Wednesday by a group of women who say the Senate must show that impunity will not be institutionalised in the Upper chamber.

Biola Akinyode, a lawyer and human rights activist accused the senate and its leadership of refusing to take action against Senator Melaye’s allegation of verbal assault on Senator Tinubu.

Senator ‎ Melaye had reportedly assaulted Senator Tinubu verbally and threatened to beat her up. Tinubu is a senator representing Lagos Central while Melaye represents Kogi West.

Tinubu is also the wife of APC leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The incident, which occurred last week during an executive session of the Upper Chamber, has drawn the fury of many Nigerians including the group.

A leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kemi Nelson remarked that the obvious impunity with which women are mistreated is enough to dissuade other women from veering into politics.

She said there must be no gender disparity in the Senate, while also suggesting that everybody should be given equal right and respect.

Senator Biodun Olujimi while addressing the protesters appreciated their concern on abuse against women.

Olujimi assured the Nigerian women of the ongoing investigation in the senate and stressed that a reconciliation process is underway and the parties involved will address the nation on the outcome. (TV360 Nigeria)
