The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, achieved a historic milestone earlier today, Friday, May 9, 2025, successfully launching its first international flights.
Two aircraft—operated by Allied Air and Air Peace—took off from the airport, bound for Saudi Arabia, carrying pilgrims from Imo, Abia, and Bayelsa states.
The occasion was graced by the presence of Nigeria’s Vice President, Kassim Shettima, who joined Governor Hope Uzodimma in addressing the departing pilgrims.
The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport holds a unique place in African history as the continent’s first airport built through communal contributions over 40 years ago. Named after the revered leader Sam Mbakwe, the airport stands as a testament to the unity and determination of the people of Imo and neighbouring Abia State, who contributed money to build the airport.
Since assuming office, Governor Uzodimma has prioritized its modernization, undertaking critical upgrades to ensure it meets global aviation standards. These efforts include extending the runway, installing night landing facilities, procuring specialized equipment, and enhancing navigational aids. Additionally, the administration strengthened aviation security and constructed an dual access road to improve connectivity to the airport.
“These steps were taken deliberately to position our airport, which means so much to us, as a beacon of progress,” Governor Uzodimma stated.
