Big Boss Stephen Keshi remains very much in charge of the Nigerian senior national football team, the Super Eagles, and the team is focused on this weekend’s crucial away Nations Cup/World Cup qualifying game against Liberia in Monrovia.
This is contrary to the rumour making the rounds that Keshi has been sacked and an unnamed German penciled down as his replacement.
The story spreading fast on several Yahoo! Groups claims: “Not yet verified but words has it that Keshi has been fired and some German dude is taking over.”
However, both the Nigerian sports authorities and one of Keshi’s confidants told News Express that the rumour is false and unfounded.
“It is a lie from hell,” Julius Ogunro, Special Assistant on Media to Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, told News Express. “It is not true.”
Ogunro disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan and the Sports Minister visited the Super Eagles’ camp today and “met with NFF officials, coaches and players.”
Also contacted, a spokesman for Keshi dismissed the rumour of his sack.
“Please ignore it,” he said. “I just spoke with him and there is nothing like that. I don’t know why this rumour is coming just before a crucial match. Some people seem bent on destroying the national team but God won’t let them succeed.”
