The Benin Electricity Distributing Company (BEDC) has warned that Nigerians may continue to witness epileptic power supply and outrageous bills, going by prevailing circumstances and summations of the company.

Mr. Curtis Nwadei, Business Manager, Agbor Business Unit, BEDC, stated this on Saturday. He called for immediate action to end the spate of bombings of oil and gas pipelines, so that Nigerians may not experience worse power problems during the dry season.

Nwadei noted that, at the moment, the nation depends more on hydro-electricity, generated by the dams in northern Nigeria.

“Currently, we are not doing well in Nigeria in terms of generation because of the incessant bombing of pipelines by militants. It is affecting power and the economy. Our output as a country that produces crude oil, our crude oil output has dropped as well. If we are to go by the rule of thumb, whereby we need one 1,000 megawatts of energy for one million people, it means we need 180,000 megawatts for 180 million people in Nigeria. This is not possible as I speak to you,” he said.

Nwadei also expressed worry over the refusal of customers to pay bills for what electricity consume, as it was affecting the performance of the company.

“You will see that the company is running at a deficit. The quantum of energy you give is not something you get back in naira and kobo. The company still runs at a loss. But at the higher level government is doing something about it,” Nwadei said. (Independent)
