The Oyo State Government has identified the economic potentials in one of her cultural heritages - the Adire atire, and plans to host a maiden expo to further raise economic awareness for bold investments in that industry soon.
A press release, e-signed by Prince Dotun Oyelade, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Oyo State, dated April 27, 2025, and made available to News Express, quotes the state's Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, at a recent stakeholder's meeting in Ibadan, as saying that “all is now set for the state to host its maiden Adire Cultural Festival”. Tagged, “Adire Carnival/Expo”, the event is billed for June 20, 2025 at the Cultural Centre, in Ibadan.
Organized in collaboration with Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi, the Founder of Adire Odua and Bizrait Exhibitions, the commissioner said the partnership reflects the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration's commitments to promoting cultural tourism and supporting local heritage industries across the state.
According to him, "The Adire Carnival is not just a celebration, but a strategic initiative to showcase Oyo State's cultural richness and craftsmanship to a global audience," adding that the initiative will also highlight government's efforts towards providing a conducive environment for the creative industry and economy to thrive, with a view to reviving traditional industries and crafts such as iron pot manufacturing in Saki, and black soap production state-wide.
He commended the support of Olori Aderonke Ademiluyi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, who during the programme described the Adire atire as "a symbol of Yoruba heritage," for being a long-time advocate for the promotion of Adire textiles.
"Adire is not just a fabric; it is our history woven into art," Olori Ademiluyi had said during the programme, promising that with support from the state government, an "Adire Skills Centre would be established in Ibadan," hinting that she had already trained over 1,000 people on the skill free of charge since 2021."
The Adire Expo Ibadan 2025 Carnival according to Prince Oyelade, "will provide a platform for local artisans, designers, and entrepreneurs to promote their craft and grow their brands," and is epected to draw tourists from Nigeria and abroad, with a vibrant lineup of cultural displays, fashion shows, and exhibitions planned-out.
