Several people have been confirmed after a car drove into a crowd at a street festival celebrating Filipino heritage in Vancouver on Saturday night, according to officials in the Canadian city.
“A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival,” the Vancouver Police Department wrote in a statement on X.
The incident took place shortly after 20:00 local time (around 5am Nigerian time).
The driver of the vehicle is in custody, according to police.
Vancouver’s mayor Ken Sim offered condolences in a statement.
He wrote on X: “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”
Sim promised to provide more information on the incident.
David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, where Vancouver is located, has also confirmed the incident, saying that he is shocked and heartbroken to hear about people killed and injured.
He confirmed that police are investigating and a suspect is in custody.
“My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones,” David Eby, Premier Eby said.
