History has been made in the areas of successful adoption of new, globally accepted standards in surgical health care practice and management protocols in Nigeria. Kelina Hospital, with state-of-the-art facilities in Abuja and Lagos, has performed well over 6,000 successful surgical operations from its inception in 2008 till date.
Currently acclaimed as “Centre for Prostate Surgery” in Nigeria, Kelina Hospital prides itself as holding-on to its medical ethos of “excellence, innovation and patient-centred care”. In the delivery of these and related healthcare services, Kelina Hospital has had such very successful surgical interventions carried out in-house, in specialised areas of Prostate healthcare treatments and management protocols like Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (keyhole surgery) for Prostate Cancer and very soon to be introduced, the hospital's Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP), to aid and boost her efforts in advancing patient-centered Robotic surgical interventions any time from now.
These revelations were made on Friday, April 18, 2025, at a media chat held at the hospital’s Board/Conference Room on Victoria Island, Lagos, and addressed by the hospital’s very senior management team led by the President, Dr. Celsus U. Undie, a Consultant Urological Surgeon.
Dr. Undie disclosed that the hospital performs well “over 100 prostate surgeries each year, (that is if the documented cases of Benign and Cancerous surgeries are added together).”
According to him, and speaking specifically on the different areas successfully touched-on by the hospital during the period under focus, the hospital’s President revealed: This month of April 2025 is a milestone, as Kelina Hospital marks 500 Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) surgeries in six years . . . Kelina was the FIRST hospital to do HoLEP in Nigeria, a surgery which started in 2018.
“Kelina Hospital was the FIRST hospital in Nigeria to perform Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (keyhole surgery) in 2012 in Nigeria. The FIRST 2 surgeries were done by Dr. Mahesh Desai, President of the World Association of Urological Surgeons (SIU), who visited Kelina Hospital that year. The FIRST 2 patients of 2012 have been cancer-free since their surgery was done.
“Kelina Hospital is privileged to be the FIRST Nigerian hospital to have a Robotic Surgeon in our service, and in this year, 2025, Kelina will be adding Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP) to our Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy services.
“Kelina Hospital is also the FIRST in Minimal Invassive Surgery for Kidney Stones, where in 2011, Kelina Hospital did the FIRST Percutaneus Nephrolithomy (PCNL) and Laser Lithotripsy for Kidney Stones in Nigeria.”
Other critical and important areas of the hospital’s strings of successes as revealed during the media parley include being the FIRST hospital in Nigeria in the area of Plasma Sterilization, a medical process for ensuring infection-free surgery since 2015. Remarkably, the hospital has successfully performed well over 6,000 surgeries since it started operation in Nigeria; and is the FIRST and currently pioneering tubeless PCNL and Mini Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Surgery for Kidney Stones since 2012 in Nigeria.
The Kelina Hospital President called on Nigerians to take opportunity of its state-of-the-art equipment and renowned medical experts in relieving themselves of the huge cost and complications in resorting to foreign medical treatment.
