The late Senator Ifeanyi Uba who represented Anambra South Senatorial District
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
The Anambra South Senatorial District bye-election to replace late Senator Ifeanyi Uba will likely take place between May and June this year.
This revelation came through a senior officer at the National Electoral Commission (NEC) in Anambra State, who pleaded anonymity.
The INEC officer told News Express yesterday, Tuesday, April 15, that: “Our duty as an electoral body is to conduct elections, and we are prepared to carry out the necessary actions once the date is set. But as of now, we have not been informed about the exact date.”
According to the source, the information available at INEC’s office in Awka suggests that the bye-election is expected to be held between May and June, adding that the Commission has received formal correspondence from the Senate regarding the election.
While saying that the necessary funds have already been allocated, the source added: “I don’t want to be quoted, but I can tell you that the election will take place before the gubernatorial election in Anambra State, possibly as early as May or June this year.”
News Express reports that late Sen. Patrick’s Ifeanyi Ubah who represented Anambra South Senator zone at the red chambers of the National Assembly died seven months ago, leaving the seat vacant. Since his demise, Anambra South Senatorial District has been without representation.
Political parties in the state and their aspirants have been on edge as to when the bye-election would be held, even as concerns grew that both the gubernatorial election and the senatorial bye-election may take place same day, November 8, 2025.
Meanwhile, 12 aspirants have so far expressed interest to contest the position through their respective party primaries across the district.
Efforts to reach the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Queen Agwu, for comment were unsuccessful, as her mobile phone line was unreachable.
