The Warri-Itakpe train station
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended train operations on its Warri-Itakpe route due to mechanical fault on its locomotive.
The mechanical fault which occurred around 1:30pm on Wednesday, left over 200 passengers stranded.
The incident, according to an official in the NRC, happened about 14 kilometres to Itakpe.
Confirming the incident to The Nation, a top official in NRC who pleaded anonymity, said passengers were evacuated via vehicles to Itakpe.
Prior to their evacuation, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security, Civil Defence Corps and local vigilantes, were deployed to the area to beef up security in the area.
The official also confirmed that all vehicles that evacuated stranded passengers arrived Itakpe before 3:00pm.
The suspension of the train operations is contained in an official notice made available to The Nation.
The notice reads: ?Important Notice to Train Crew and Passengers;
We regret to inform you that due to unforeseen mechanical issues, we are forced to cancel:- Today?s afternoon (Wednesday) train from Itakpe to Warri and tomorrow?s (Thursday 10th April, 2025) trains WITS 01 and WITS 02.
?Train operations will resume on Friday, April 11th, 2025. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. Our team is working diligently to resolve the issue and ensure a smooth service.
