Lawmaker blasts past IGPs over undue special promotion in Police Force, demands reversal

Senator representing Bauchi Central, Isah Misau, has decried the spate of unwholesome and corrupt use of special promotions in the Nigeria Police Force by past Inspectors General of Police (IGP) and the Police Service Commission (PSC), saying it is worrisome and bastardised.

He however, called on the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, during Tuesday plenary session, while laying a petition 'on the abuse and misuse of special promotions in the NPF and the PSC to reverse the politically motivated and corrupt special promotion, so as to motivate officers and restore discipline.
According to Senator Misau, “Special Promotions are understandably given to gallant and courageous officers who heroically risked their lives to serve and protect the nation, but regrettably, Special Promotions have now been bastardised.
“Records now show that only officers attached to, associated with or related to politicians are now routinely considered for special promotions, while gallant officers on peacekeeping missions, who ought to be considered are not recognised.”
He added: “Officers on special Anti-Robbery assignment, DPOs, investigation and intelligence are also left unconsidered.”
Isah, who explained that the PSC whose function is to recruit, train, discipline and promote members of the Force now indulge in promotion racketeering, noted that “this apparent abuse has not only worsened corruption in the Force, it has also bred silent animosity among officers.”
