The 10,000 hectares of land allegedly seized for the rice project
Farmers from border communities between Obi and Awe local government areas of Nasarawa State staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday against an alleged forceful takeover of their farmlands by the area?s traditional ruler for a government-backed rice project.
Leading the protest in Agwatashi, the spokesman, Moses Arotu Ikwogya, appealed to Governor Abdullahi Sule to intervene and reclaim over 10,000 hectares of farmland, which the farmers claim were seized for the expansion of the Jangwa Rice Project without their consent.
The protesters marched through Agwatashi, including the palace of the Osoho of Olosoho, Alhaji Umar Apeshi.
Speaking with journalists after the hours-long protest, Ikwogya recounted a meeting with the traditional ruler two months ago, where farmers were asked to open bank accounts for compensation?an offer they rejected.
When contacted, the Osoho of Olosoho, Alhaji Umar Apeshi, declined to comment but later sent a text message saying ?There is no protest. The land was acquired by the Nasarawa State Government for agricultural purposes.?
The commissioner for Agriculture, Tanko Tunga, expressed concern over the situation, stating that he was unaware of any forceful land seizure and assuring that the matter would be investigated. (Daily Trust)
