The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has arrested 51 irregular migrants at New Nyanya, Karu local government area of Nasarawa state. Karu is a surburb of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
The migrants are said to have sneaked into Nigeria from Mali and picked up at their hideouts within the new Nyanya axis.
The migrants, who had no formal documents, were between 17 and 25 years old. It was gathered that they were arrested following credible intelligence by NIS officials.
NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, confirmed the arrest of the migrants.
Akinlabi said 11 of the irregular migrants are females, while 40 others were males.
He said preliminary investigation conducted by the NIS showed that the migrants may have been victims of Trafficking in Person (TIP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SOM).
He said none of them presented any valid travel document or residence permit during interrogation.
The NIS Spokesman said they have been taken into the custody of the Service and are undergoing further profiling and investigation. (The Nation)
