A magistrate court sitting in Minna, Niger State, has ordered that Sabo Mohammed, a 70-year-old man from Manigi village, be remanded in Minna Correctional Center over the allegation of stabbing a police prosecutor attached to the Manigi Magistrate Court to death.
According to police reports, on the 3rd of last month, the suspect attacked the deceased, Inspector Nasir Musa, with a sharp knife, suspecting him of enticing his junior wife.
The report indicates that following the incident, the deceased was rushed to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Bida for treatment, where he was confirmed dead.
This offense contravenes Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, which is punishable by death.
Police prosecutor Inspector Ogiri Emmanuel informed the court that the details of the case were in the file and that a copy would be sent to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
The suspect pleaded guilty to the charges when the police report was read to him during the first mention of the case. He expressed regret for taking the law into his own hands.
Presiding Magistrate Hajiya Hadiza Hamza Imam, after careful consideration of the gravity of the offense, condemned the suspect?s actions, noting that the court lacks jurisdiction to try cases of culpable homicide and will await legal advice from the Ministry of Justice.
Magistrate Hadiza Hamza Imam thereby adjourned the matter to the fifteenth of next month for further mention and remanded the suspect accordingly. (Nigerian Tribune)
