There are indications that a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and an ex-minister are among the main pointmen in the emerging coalition to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
Nigerian Tribune gathered at the weekend that the duo is reportedly working assiduously behind the scenes to galvanise support from critical stakeholders across the country for the coalition.
They are among other political bigwigs, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation, Honourable Rotimi Amaechi, involved in intense consultations with like-minds across the political spectrum to form the broad-based platform capable of taking on the APC.
The source said though the ex-minister is currently playing a low profile in the mobilization drive, the South-East-born politician is said to be the key facilitator of the movement.
He was also a former chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of a prominent government agency and member of the House of Representatives.
He is reportedly on the same page with former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-rufai, who defected from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing irreconcilable differences on the running of the ruling party.
The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had promised to lobby other notable politicians to join the SDP in the bid to forge a common unity that can face the APC in subsequent elections in the country.
Another personality said to be working hard from the background is an SGF during the Buhari presidency.
“All of them are in the same boat; it’s just that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is the one talking. He is by no means the coordinator,” a close ally of one of the leaders told the Nigerian Tribune.
Other prominent politicians, including a former minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Rauf Aregbesola, former SSG, minister of state for education and former minister of transportation are working even harder. Even former vice President Atiku Abubakar is moving all over the place over this union. It’s just that Rufai is the ‘megaphone.’
“The nearest to a coordinator of all they have is the former minister for education. He is an absolutely brilliant young man, who was a minister and member of the National Assembly,” the source claimed.
But there were insinuations that the SDP could be a stop gap for the coalition as the leaders are looking at a bigger picture on the appropriate platform to be deployed in the battle against the APC in 2027. (Nigerian Tribune)
