Former Governor of Rivers State Rufus Ada-George has called for peace and restraint in the face of the ongoing political crisis in the oil-rich state following the Supreme Court’s verdict on the political situation in the state.

Addressing journalists on Monday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, the elder statesman warned against inflammatory statements, threats, and ultimatums that could escalate tensions. He urged all political actors to exercise caution and prioritise the well-being of the state.

“Although the Supreme Court has rendered its verdict, there is still room for humane and pragmatic decisions that can help mitigate the adverse effects of the ruling on the people,” he said.

Ada-George referenced historical crises, particularly the 1962 Western Regional Crisis, stressing that failure to manage political disputes could have far-reaching consequences beyond Rivers State.

He expressed concern over the current tension, pointing to the withholding of monthly allocations to the state and its visible impact on ordinary citizens. He called for dialogue and compromise, stating that even in war-torn regions, negotiation has remained a vital tool for peacebuilding.

In a direct appeal to political leaders, George urged former governors and their deputies to unite and speak in the state’s best interest. He also called on the 32 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to set aside personal interests and work towards stability and progress.

“As the oldest civilian governor of Rivers State, I remain optimistic about our future. Let us embrace compromise, unity, and peace as we chart a new course for our dear state,” he said.

The former governor’s address followed the Rivers State House of Assembly’s 72-hour ultimatum issued to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman and Commissioners to appear before it. This followed an earlier ultimatum given to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 budget and submit names of commissioner nominees.
