By IKENNA OSUOHA
The South East Development Commission (SEDC) on Monday presented a budget of N250 billion to the House of Representatives.
The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on South East Development Commission (SEDC), Rep. Chris Nkwonta, said this at a news conference in Abuja.
Nkwonta said that the budget would be targeted at addressing infrastructural deficits in the geopolitical zone.
“This budget essentially is going to target those areas where there were deficits in terms of infrastructure, erosion and other areas of human capital development.
“This budget is a take-off grant, do not also forget that the commission is expecting money from the federal allocation,” he said.
The SEDC House Committee Chairman, who reiterated the commitment of the commission to development of South East, lauded President Tinubu for creating the commission.
Nkwonta saluted the courage and magnanimity of President Tinubu to bring into reality the three Rs of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation pledged after the Nigerian civil war.
According to him, “We have had six military regimes, five civilian administrations and none remembered us except Tinubu.”
He pledged the preparedness of the commission to restore peace and order in the zone with stronger collaboration of stakeholders.
Nkwonta said that the SEDC through its projects implementation would bring about end to agitations and youthful unrest in the area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Bola Tinubu created the SEDC to address the issues of marginalization and under-development of the zone occasioned by the civil war. (NAN)
