Ebonyi varsity sanctions 14 students over exam malpractice, others

David Umahi Federal University Health Sciences, Uburu, in the Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has sanctioned 14 students of the institution for alleged examination misconduct, stealing, and poor academic performance.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Jesse Uneke disclosed this at the institution’s premises during the 4th matriculation ceremony of the university on Saturday.

He noted that two students were expelled for examination misconduct, three received a one-year suspension for stealing, and five received a one-year semester suspension for the same offence.

Uneke further said three were withdrawn for poor academic performance.

He urged the students of the university to focus on their studies and avoid any act that can affect their stay in the school, warning that the university has zero tolerance for anti-social behaviours.

The Vice-Chancellor said the varsity, which started with 26 students in 2021, has experienced an unprecedented increase in student population and now has 2,496 students.

He noted that 990 students were newly admitted into the university this year.

Uneke further disclosed that the institution has treated 200 cancer patients from various parts of the country.

He said, “The university cancer centre is fully operational and has treated 200 cancer patients coming from various parts of Nigeria as of December 2024. The services have been expanded in 2024 to include chemotherapy. The official flag-off of the centre will take place on March 8, 2025.

“This university maintains very strict discipline; the university rules and regulations are unforgiving when they are violated.

“Between the last matriculation and the present, the Senate of the University approved disciplinary actions on a total of 14 students, depending on the magnitude of their offence.

“Of these, two students were expelled due to examination misconduct; three students received a one-year suspension for stealing; five students received a one-semester suspension for stealing; and three students were withdrawn as a result of poor academic performance.”
