Gunman disguised as lawyer kills notorious gang leader in court

A notorious gang leader, Sanjeewa Kumara Samararathne, was shot and killed inside a courthouse in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, by a gunman disguised as a lawyer. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, has intensified concerns over escalating gang violence in the country.

According to police, the gunman used a revolver smuggled into the courtroom inside a hollowed-out book by a female accomplice, who remains at large. The gang leader, popularly known as Ganemulle Sanjeewa, had been in police custody since his arrest in September 2023 and was facing multiple murder charges. He was shot while being escorted by a dozen police officers and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The shooter initially managed to flee but was later captured by authorities. Police have identified him under multiple names, though his exact identity remains uncertain. Meanwhile, the female suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Pinpura Dewage Ishara Sewwandi. Authorities have announced a monetary reward for information leading to her capture. Additionally, a policeman and a van driver suspected of aiding the suspects have been arrested.

The assassination has prompted renewed discussions on gang violence in Sri Lanka’s parliament, with an opposition MP calling it a “major security issue.” Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, who had previously pledged to crack down on criminal networks, reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling organised crime.

The incident has also raised concerns over courthouse security, leading to immediate policy changes. Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara announced on Thursday that new security protocols, including the deployment of armed guards when high-risk individuals are brought to court, are being implemented. Previously, armed personnel were not permitted in courtrooms.

This latest killing adds to a growing wave of gang-related violence in Sri Lanka, with at least nine people reported dead in similar shootings this year, according to police data cited by AFP. Authorities have vowed to intensify efforts to curb gang warfare and prevent further attacks. (ARISE NEWS)
