The said students kissing and exchanging gifts during the Valentine party
By DIANA OLUWOLE/ BLESSING OKORIBE
A viral video capturing students kissing and exchanging gifts ? like money bouquets ? has sparked intense controversy and reignited debates over Valentine?s Day celebrations in schools.
The footage, widely shared on social media, has raised eyebrows among parents and educators, prompting concerns about the appropriateness of public displays of affection and gift-giving among students.
Judamito Momodu, a petty trader, criticized the trend: ?Valentine?s celebrations, especially among Gen Z students, should be discouraged. Exchanging gifts and kisses isn?t suitable for young people.?
Christiana Abudu shared her distress: ?It?s heartbreaking to see children using their parents? hard-earned money to buy gifts for their boyfriends and girlfriends. Valentine?s is meant for couples, not students.?
Businessman Peter Samson agreed: ?Valentine?s should be for married couples to rekindle their spark, not for school-aged children.?
But not everyone condemns the trend. Stella Oghenekwaefe, a concerned citizen, argued: ?Valentine?s can be a good opportunity to teach kids about love and kindness. However, the negative ways it?s celebrated should be discouraged.?
One anonymous parent blamed poor parental guidance: ?If a 12-year-old is in a relationship and bringing gifts home, and the parent doesn?t question it, that?s a parenting issue.?
This hot-button issue highlights the need for parents, educators, and policymakers to establish clear boundaries on student celebrations. As discussions continue, one thing is certain: Valentine?s Day in schools is a thorny subject requiring thoughtful debate. (Text, excluding headline: Delta State News Bulletin)
