A Professor of Biochemistry at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Professor Oladipo Ademuyiwa, was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Kemta-Somorin Road in Abeokuta on Sunday.

In a statement signed by Dr. Ayo Ajasa, Chairman of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate CDA, he stated that the incident could have been avoided if the necessary safety measures had been in place.

He therefore called on the Ogun State Government to install speed breakers and other essential safety measures to prevent further tragedies on the road.

Ajasa lamented the government?s insensitivity in failing to install speed bumps on the road despite several requests.

The statement reads:

?The Ajebo Road Housing Estate, Kemta, Abeokuta, is deeply saddened by the tragic and avoidable loss of Prof. Oladipo Ademuyiwa, who fell victim to a reckless hit-and-run driver on Prof. Wole Soyinka Road within Kemta-Somorin Road.

?This unfortunate incident, which occurred on Sunday, February 16, 2025, has once again highlighted the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further tragedies on this road.

*?It is disheartening that despite repeated appeals to the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies, no concrete action has been taken to install speed breakers and other necessary safety measures.

?The government promptly installed speed bumps on the Ilugun end of the road but has ignored our persistent requests to safeguard lives in Ajebo Road Housing Estate.?

The community is demanding the immediate installation of speed breakers along Prof. Wole Soyinka Road, the installation of a lorry barrier, clear traffic signage to caution motorists against reckless driving, and stricter law enforcement to curb excessive speeding within the estate.

Ajasa further stated:

?It is unacceptable that a community of law-abiding citizens must endure repeated accidents, near-fatal encounters, and now the loss of an esteemed professor simply due to government inaction. Another accident occurred within 24 hours of this tragic incident, proving that this road remains a death trap.

?We hold the government accountable and call on the Governor of Ogun State to intervene immediately before more lives are lost.

?We also appeal to the media, civil society organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to amplify this call for justice and safer roads in our community.? (Nigerian Tribune)
