As in London, so, too, in Moscow: OKAGBARE FLOPS IN 100M FINALS

In what was a replay of her London 2012 Olympics outing just over a year ago, Nigeria’s gold medal hope Blessing Okagbare minutes ago flopped in the 100 metres women’s final at the on-going World Athletics Championships in Moscow, Russia.

Okagbare placed sixth with a disappointing time of 11.04 secs. The 24-year-old had a poor start and couldn’t recover like she had done in the semi-final, giving other athletes the opportunity to claim the top prizes.

World Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took the victory in emphatic fashion completely out-running others to claim gold in a time of 10.72secs while Murielle Ahoure from Ivory Coast claimed silver and Carmelita Jeter trailed in third.

“I had my obstacles. I started to feel pain underneath my left butt cheek. It was really hurting but I knew what I worked for. I just came out here and I executed my race. I wasn’t focused on anyone else. It was all about execution,” Okagbare said.

The leggy star who yesterday broke the country’s 14-year medal wait with a long jump silver leap, will now divert her attention to the 200m and the 4x100m relay to other medal options.

News Express recalls that Okagbare had on Aug 5 last failed to sparkle when it mattered most, crumbling in the women’s 100 metres final at the London 2012 Olympics, finishing 11.01 Seconds; her worst performance in recent times.
