Police summon Sowore over viral extortion video

Activist Omoyele Sowore

Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore has been summoned by the police following a viral video he recorded, alleging police extortion at a checkpoint near Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The video, which has drawn significant attention on social media with nearly 917,000 views on ‘X’ and over 2.9 million views on TikTok, shows officers allegedly extorting money from motorists.

The footage also captures Sowore challenging the officers for obstructing traffic.

In the video, Sowore said, “You are not supposed to be causing traffic on the airport road. We are not parking. Go and bring your Oga. You people should calm down.”

Despite his protests, officers reportedly blocked his vehicle, insisting he park. After a tense exchange, Sowore was allowed to proceed, but an officer was heard saying, “God punish you,” to which Sowore responded, “God punish you too.”

Sowore confirmed on Thursday that a senior police officer had contacted him regarding the video.

“I have just concluded a conversation with a senior Nigeria Police Force officer in Abuja, who requested my presence for questioning regarding an extortion video I filmed at a police ‘checkpoint’ in Lagos,” he wrote on social media.

He added that while the summon has been issued, no formal charges have been filed yet. “I am still awaiting,” Sowore stated.

According to sources, the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, allegedly pushed for the investigation after consulting with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. (The Guardian)
