President Trump, Prime Minister Egede of Greenland
The US president previously expressed his desire to acquire the Danish territory.
“We don’t want to be Danish either. Greenland’s future will be decided by Greenland,” Prime Minister Mute Egede told a press conference. Our country and our people will decide what happens to Greenland.”
In the run-up to his inauguration on Monday, Trump had stated his interest in the strategically located island and its natural resources. This has caused a stir, and Trump has not ruled out military intervention to bring Greenland under US control.
Currently, the Arctic island has autonomous status within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The Danish government has also criticised the US president’s plans.
“Of course we cannot have a world order where countries, if they’re big enough, no matter what they’re called, can just help themselves to what they want,” Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said on Tuesday. (AFP)
