Doctor indicted for sexual assault of over 200 patients

Sentenced Dr Derrick Todd

A Massachusetts grand jury has indicted a former doctor on charges of sexually assaulting more than 200 patients over a span of more than a decade, according to authorities.

Dr Derrick Todd is alleged to have conducted unnecessary medical procedures, including pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, and testicular examinations, dating back to 2010.

On Thursday, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office announced that Todd was indicted on two counts of rape in connection with the alleged sexual assault of two women.

During his arraignment on Friday, Todd pleaded not guilty and was released on $10,000 bail. He has been ordered to have no contact with victims, surrender his passport and medical licences, refrain from practising medicine, and not apply for new passports or licences, according to a spokesperson for the district attorney’s office.

The alleged assaults, authorities said, occurred in December 2022 and June 2023. Investigations into further allegations of misconduct by Todd are ongoing.

William Thompson, an attorney at Boston-based firm Lubin & Meyer, which represents over 180 of Todd’s accusers, indicated that the criminal case against the former doctor is expected to expand.

Thompson remarked, “It’s just the beginning of the criminal case against Dr. Todd, but it does help validate the civil claims that Lubin & Meyer is pursuing on behalf of so many of his former patients.

“Fundamentally, it’s about a doctor abusing his position. And taking advantage of patients who put their trust in him for his own personal sexual gratification.”

Thompson also confirmed that the civil case against Todd is currently in the discovery phase. Requests for comment from Todd’s legal representatives, Anthony Abeln and Ingrid Martin, were not immediately returned.

Todd, formerly a rheumatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, was dismissed from his role in July 2023 following an internal investigation prompted by anonymous complaints earlier that year. He subsequently entered a voluntary agreement with the Board of Registration in Medicine, barring him from practising medicine across the United States.

The hospital, along with other defendants named in the lawsuit, has been accused of failing to act on knowledge of Todd’s misconduct. His alleged victims range in age from teenagers to women in their 60s. (AriseNews TV: Text, Excluding Headline)
