Kano agog as Sanusi’s wife becomes Giwar Dan Majen Kano

Fourteen months after Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was turbanned Dan Majen Kano by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, it was the turn of his wife, Sadiya Sanusi, to also step out for glory as she was today turbanned Giwar Dan Majen Kano.

The ancient city of Kano came alive as Nigerians from all walks of life gathered to witness the historic and colourful event as the CBN Governor, who beamed with smiles, turbanned his beloved Sadiya.

Bestowing her with the title, Prince Sanusi described the elated Sadiya as the “Pillar” of all of his successes. He stressed that Sadiya has been “a pillar of stability” on the home front, saying: “Credit goes to this woman of blue blood that proved to be a pillar of peace in all my trying periods.

“The decision to confer this title on this woman of substance was a sign of gratitude for the positive role she has played in my life over the last 25 years in marriage. I married Sadiya 25 years ago during the silver jubilee of the revered Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero. By next December, it would be exactly 25 years of eventful wedlock.”

The Sanusi family later posed for photographs – including with guests from far and near, among them wives of the Oba of Lagos, Alhaji Rilwanu Babatunde Osuolale Akiolu I, and his representatives.

News Express recalls that the CBN Governor was bestowed with the coveted title of Dan Majen Kano on June 8 last year in recognition of his experience and exposure as well as his good character. Bestowing the title on him, the Emir had said: “We are aware of your good work not only in Nigeria but also abroad. We are also aware of your patriotism and cordial relationship with the people as well as your support to the less privileged.”

According to one report, “The title of Dan Majen Kano is very historic to the Kano Emirate as it commenced and became an inherited title by the Fulani dynasty which indicates Fulani rulership of Kano Emirate since about 500 years ago.

“The title Dan Majen was exclusively reserved for the royal family members right from the Kano Habe dynasty and the Sullubawa dynasty as most prominent among those who held the title under the Sullubawa dynasty was the Emir of Kano Ali IbnAbdullahi alias Alu who reigned between 1894 and 1903.

“According to history, the first category of the titles is reserved for royal family members while the second is for the descendants of the jihad leaders such as the Makama, and the third category for outstanding people who served and brought great benefit to the emirate.”
