The owner of a very popular radio and television station in Lagos (names withheld) was almost recently shot to death by soldiers on patrol along Idemili-Nnobi road.
According to him, after the Christmas festivities in his community in Anambra State, he was going to Asaba Airport in neighbouring Delta State with three Department of State Services (DSS) officials when some soldiers in uniform double-crossed their vehicle, ordered them off the road and asked them to lie on the road.
He said that the soldiers cocked their guns and wanted to shoot the three of them, saying that they looked like kidnappers.
According to him, even when the DSS officers brought out their identity cards and showed to the soldiers, they still insisted that they were kidnappers.
Speaking further, the shaken media mogul said that all their pleas of innocence fell on deaf ears as the soldiers kept on manhandling them.
He said that their saving grace was the arrival of the leader of the patrol team who was able to give them a hearing ear.
According to him, the experience simply showed to him how innocent people are being killed in the South East.
His words: ?I can say that we just escaped death by whiskers. I left my village to Awka and when I got there I went to the DSS office and took some of the officers to escort me to Asaba Airport. When we got to Nnobi around 12:30 in the afternoon, a military patrol vehicle double-crossed us, ordered our car out of the road, claiming that we looked like kidnappers. They asked us to lie on the road. The DSS officers with me brought out their identity cards and showed to them but they refused, claiming that it is fake. It was the arrival of their boss that saved us, if not we would have been dead by now.?
The scary experience, according to the media mogul, is proof that a lot of people being killed in the South East by soldiers are innocent.
