Chief John Osamede Adun
The National Union of Butchery Workers of Nigeria (NUBWN)/ National Butchers Union of Nigeria, has called on the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment to withdraw the registration of a newly formed parallel union with the name, ?National Union of Butchery Employees of Nigeria? to avoid internal conflicts among members.
Making the call at a national executive meeting in Benin City, Edo State, the Union?s National President, Chief John Osamede Adun, described the new ?National Union of Butchery Employees of Nigeria? as illegal and called for immediate intervention by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi.
While emphasizing the union?s commitment to peace, Chief Adun
urged caution to prevent a potential crisis, nothing that, ?Our Union was registered in 1966, and it is not a baby Union.?
The union?s national president, who also frowned at the development whereby two unions are performing the same functions and roles said, ?We have written through our lawyers to the Ministry of Labour to rescind the registration of the rival union.
?We observed with dismay that the sole aim of registration of a new Butchers Union is to cause division, disunity and disaffection among the existing and age long National Union of Butchery Workers of Nigeria (NUBWN)/ National Butchers Union of Nigeria.
?We are not in support of any crisis in Edo State Butchers Union and we call on the federal government through the Ministry of Labour and Employment to cancel the registration of the newly registered body to avert any bloody confrontation by our members in Edo state,? he said.
On his part, the National Secretary Ahmed Muhammed Borgu, who decried the registration of a parallel body by the Federal Government, said the issue, if not immediately resolved, could result in bloody crisis, noting that the Butcher?s Union had tools namely knifes and cutlasses are weapons that aggrieved members usually use to pick a fight.
He said the government must intervene now to ensure that the original union, registered in 1966, remains as the only legal and recognized union, just as he warned those behind the forming of the parallel union to desist forthwith and not disrupted the peace in the union in Edo State.
Chief Adun who is the Ayobahan of Benin kingdom however appealed to the ministry and judiciary to restore unity by revoking the registration of the newly formed body. (Daily Independent)
