Ex-Minister, Dr Chris Ngige
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
Trouble is brewing in Alor, the country home of the former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, as youths of the community under the umbrella of Alor Youth Initiative have warned that the community?s annual meeting must not hold. Alor is located in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
A letter by the Youth wing led by Conrad Okezie Akubueze and Emecheta Ubabunike said: ?NO EVENT, GATHERING OR ANY FUNCTION ARE ALLOWED AT ST MARY?S CATHOLIC CHURCH FIELD ON EVERY 30THDECEMBER?.
It insisted that anyone who dares would be held responsible for whatever violence that takes place in the church and attendant destructions.
The letter read: ?We write to notify you based on the above information that no event or gathering whatsoever are allowed to hold at the church field.
The said date 30th December was reserved for the Alor Annual General Meeting (OgbakoAlor), no other functions including shops are allowed to hold within Alor community boarders during the meeting on that day.
?The Alor Youth Initiative advice that everybody should desist from holding any event on the church field the day of the meeting and during the meeting and to stop disunity and dichotomy in the community.
?Alor town has their ancestral Obi Ezeagbudugbu palace where we hold end of the year meetings (Ogbako-Alor), sequel to the above, the youth have resolved never to allow any further illegal, mischievous, parallel and unconstitutional end of the year meeting at St Mary?s Catholic Church field again.
?We are sure that you will not like to see the church premises as a battle field with its attendant?s wanton destruction of lives and property. Violators will be held responsible for any consequences.?
Meanwhile, the dust raised by the Igweship tussle in the community ? where one monarch is recognized by the government, while another was crowned by the community as the popular Igwe ? is yet to settle.
It however seems like there will be trouble as a source from Alor Peoples Convention said that the community has made up their mind to defy the order. The source said the order was coming because the government recognized monarch, Igwe MacAnthony Okonkwo who wants to hold a parallel convention at his Obi (Obi Agbudugbu) seeks to use the youths to stop the popular one by the community, which is to hold at St Mary?s Church field.
According to the source, the reason for trying to coerce the community to hold the convention at Obi Agbudugbu which is considered to be the square of Igwe Okonkwo was to whittle the powers of the convention.
The source added: ?The community has resolved to hold the convention in St Mary field, let?s see if they can stop something that has been an age-long practice in this community,?
