Blood is presently flowing at the scene of an accident involving buses of Abia Transport and ANIDS (Anambra), in the the Ijebu Ode axis of the Lagos – Benin Expressway.
Several passengers in the 15-seater Hummer buses have been left with injuries, with no rescue operations in sight more than 30 minutes after the accident.
News Express learnt that the accident was caused by policemen at one of the numerous checkpoints that dot the road.
“Both vehicles were heading for the East,” one of the passengers told News Express. “The policemen stationed at one of the many bad spots were flagging down vehicles when the Abia Transport driver suddenly applied the brake to avoid running into the vehicle which had just stopped in front of his. The ANIDS bus following closely rammed into Abia. Once the accident happened, the policemen drove off, leaving the victims to their fate,” the source added.
News Express reports that rebuilding work on that stretch of the road has been going on at snail-speed, with motorists having to cope with very bad gullies, unprotected bridges and many check points at which corrupt policemen needlessly harass and extort money, especially from drivers of private vehicles.
