MOSOP condemns killings in Ogoniland, calls for tight security

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has expressed displeasure over recent attacks and wanton destruction of lives and properties in Kporghor in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State – allegedly by the neighbouring Wakama community in Ogu-Bolo Local Government Area.

A statement issued on Monday and signed by the movement’s Publicity Secretary, Fegalo Nsuke, indicates that the group is “saddened that despite repeated notifications to the government to take adequate steps to protect the people of Kporghor and other communities that have come under attack from their neighbors, the government appears to be insensitive to this issue and failing in its responsibility to protect the lives of its citizens.”

Nsuke further stated: “At the time of this release, the people of Kporghor had been driven out of their homes. Seven persons have been confirmed dead and all homes in the community including schools and worship centers have been destroyed.”

Furthermore, MOSOP urged the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and the security agencies to take urgent steps to restore normalcy in the affected Ogoni communities including Kporghor, Ekporo in Eleme Local Government Area and to ensure the security of other Ogoni communities that have come under attack from their neighbours.
