The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Bauchi, has declared a total and indefinite strike to press their demands on the university management.
The strike was declared on Friday, November 29, 2024, following an emergency congress held at the Yuli Campus of the university in Bauchi.
Addressing journalists, ASUU Chairperson Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu explained that the decision was a result of the resolutions reached during the congress.
According to him, the resolutions included a review of the branch’s demands during the congress, which was attended by the NEC visitation team. The congress reassessed the progress on their demands before the university management.
The chairperson noted that the congress observed a lack of readiness and commitment from the university administration and government to address their demands, despite several efforts to engage them.
The congress further noted that all available mechanisms to resolve the issues had been exhausted, and all attempts to get the authorities to act had been unsuccessful.
Consequently, a motion was moved by a member of the union for the branch to embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike, which was seconded by another member.
“Following this, the congress passed a resolution for the branch to embark on a comprehensive and indefinite strike until further notice,” Nuhu stated.
He added, “The strike action commenced immediately at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2024. All members of ASUU at SAZU are directed to comply. No academic activity or meeting of any kind will take place during this period.”
The chairperson reiterated, “Members are directed to embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike until further notice. This includes the suspension of all activities such as teaching, marking, meetings, accreditation, and any other duties related to academic staff.” (Nigerian Tribune)
