Chickens
A social media user has sparked widespread reactions after posting on X (formerly Twitter) about his mother-in-law’s festive chicken priced at ?30,000.
The post, shared on November 28, 2024, was intended as a promotional effort to attract buyers from Ughelli and Warri but quickly turned into a heated discussion about the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
“Guys, if you are around Ughelli or Warri environ, kindly patronise my mother-in-law please, “She sells each for ?30,000 only,” he wrote.
The post triggered a flood of comments as many Nigerians questioned how the price of chicken has skyrocketed in recent years.
“Chicken ?30k??? Something I used to buy for ?1,500 like two years ago. Jesus?,” wrote @abazwhyllzz.
Others traced the price hike to Nigeria’s economic struggles, with @omorogiec commenting: “This kind of chicken was barely ?2,500 before APC came into power and sodomised Nigeria’s economy. E don red now! ?30k?.”
The humour wasn’t lost on some users, as @Saadabidemi joked, “Dey play ?30k for this chicken??,” while @shalomdfirst added, “Chicken ?30k? E better make I chop crayfish this Christmas o??.”
Comparisons to Nigeria’s minimum wage were also highlighted. @iam_mozeas quipped, “Lol ?30k each? Wetin happen? Exactly minimum wages?.”
For many, the priceshows how tough things have become for the average Nigerian. @jidifeanyi expressed concern: “Chicken don reach ?30k for this country? This is ridiculous. How will the poor cope with such an amount??.
Others offered alternative solutions, albeit sarcastically. “Na this year we go finally use lizard meat?do Christmas,” wrote @Chrizkhalifa21. (The Guardian)
