Chijioke, Chairman, ObioAkpor Local Government Area of Rivers State
The Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Council of Rivers State, Ihunwo Chijioke, has predicted that the Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, would face a daunting task ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to Ihunwo, the battle is not just about Fubara’s re-election, but about the very soul and resources of the state. Speaking to the Akpor Unity Forum, a socio-political group in Obio/Akpor, Ihunwo emphasised the importance of unity and loyalty among supporters.
He acknowledged that some individuals may abandon the governor for personal reasons, urging the group to remain firm and committed to the governor’s vision for Rivers State.
He said: “I know that some of the people currently supporting Fubara will ditch us before the next general elections in 2027; maybe for some personal and selfish reasons, but I urge you all to remain firm and loyal to my leader because his priority is Rivers State and its people. I plead with you to take the governor’s message to the nooks and crannies of the Akpor kingdom.”
Ihunwo, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Ofonime Okon, promised to carry members of the group along in the council’s administration, offering potential appointments as aides or committee members to enhance development in the local council.
“You can take it for granted that we will, as an administration, carry you along in what we do in the council. It can come in any shape, be it appointment as aides or as members of committees all geared towards enhancing development in our council” Ihunwo assured.
IN another development, the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule has designated October 29 as a day to commemorate what it described as the “unprovoked attacks on the legislature,” following the burning down of its hallowed Chamber 386 days ago.
This decision was made at the Assembly’s 68th Legislative Sitting yesterday. The House Leader, Major Jack, recalled the sad events, particularly the burning down of the Chamber by arsonists on October 29, 2023.
Amaewhule expressed frustration that no convictions have been made since then. He also condemned the demolition of the Assembly Complex by the governor on December 13, 2023, without the knowledge and approval of the House, describing it as a brutal attack on democracy. Amaewhule said: “It has been 386 days since the heartless burning down of the hallowed Chamber of the House, yet no conviction has been made.”
Consequently, the lawmakers resolved to set aside every October 29 as a solemn day to remember the malicious attacks on the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Also, the lawmakers directed Julius Berger Plc to repair the collapsed sections of alternative routes to the Port Harcourt Ring Road. The directive follows a report by the House Committee on Works, which commended the committee for its detailed findings.
Members urged the committee to follow up on the matter to ensure the execution of the project. (The Guardian)
