The new leadership of Boko Haram under Imam Liman Ibrahim is brainstorming with the group’s senior commanders with a view to ending the campaign of violence that has consumed some 4,000 lives since 2009.
This was disclosed by Boko Haram’s new spokesman Abubakar Babasani Ibn Yusuf while speaking on the possibility of cementing the ceasefire agreement being discussed by the group and the Nigerian Government.
“Babasani says the leadership has been consulting all senior commanders to assure compliance with the ceasefire,” reports the US-based Huffington Post which Thursday broke the news of the shooting and deposing of erstwhile Boko Haram leader, Sheikh Abubakar Shekau, in a palace coup. “He said commanders as far afield as Niger, Chad, Sudan and Cameroon have agreed to the ceasefire and discussions with the Nigerian government on the subject of a peace deal,” the report added.
The new leadership of leader of Boko Haram (full name Jama’atu Ahlul Sunnah Lih Da’awa Wal Jihad) is reported to have already sent representatives to the Nigerian capital Abuja to hold talks with representatives of the Nigerian Government.
Shekau was taken out by his more liberal lieutenants following his staunch opposition to the ceasefire announcement made June 26 by the Boko Haram Amnesty Committee and confirmed by a ranking member of the group.
