Branch Secretary, Nigerian Red Cross Society Cross River State, Mr Eni Joseph
The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has successfully held a three-day First Aid training workshop for journalists in Cross River State. The event, held at Metropolitan Hotel, Calabar equipped 25 media professionals with life-saving skills for emergencies-especially those they might encounter on the job.
Participants received hands-on training in CPR, wound management, and more. The initiative underscores the critical role of First Aid knowledge in ensuring safety within and beyond media environments.
Mr Eni Joseph, Branch Secretary, Nigerian Red Cross Society – Cross River State, emphasized that First Aid knowledge is crucial for journalists due to the risks associated with their profession. He noted that First Aid’s primary objective is to save lives and promote swift recovery.
“The idea of training of Journalists in First Aid is actually not new. This is the second time that we are doing it. Based on your area of professionalism, you are actually exposed to a certain level of risk in your line of work. So the knowledge of First Aid at work could be very useful. You can use it to help your colleagues, family and friends. It is a lifesaving skill you actually need to have.”
Meanwhile, the First Aid Trainer Daniel Edobor led the training, covering critical skills such as placing casualties in recovery positions, performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), controlling bleeding, managing fractures, treating home injuries, and safely transporting casualties to hospitals.
Twenty-five journalists from various media outlets received ICRC-certified First Aid kits and certificates upon completing the interactive training.
