Group calls for sack of Mele Kyari over fuel price hike

NNPC group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari

Transparency Accountability for Development Initiatives (TADI) has called for the sack of the Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) over the indiscriminate increase in the pump price of fuel.

They said the fuel price hike was without due consultation and adequate measures to curtail the hardship it may cause for the people.

The group, in a statement signed by its public relations officer, Adeniran Taiwo, said the sufferings Nigerians are currently going through will need presidential intervention and sacking of some public office holders.

He said President Bola Tinubu may need to relieve all the people managing the oil sector of their duties and inject fresh hands to savage the economy.

According to them, systemic corruption has left Nigeria reeling from an enduring fuel crisis and a crushing debt burden and the time for deception is over as Nigerians need to demand accountability and real leadership now.

Adeniran lamented that Nigeria?s hopes were pinned on the Dangote Refinery to ease the fuel supply crisis but the venture has failed to provide relief even as Nigerians continue to see rising costs and little progress towards resolving the structural issues plaguing our energy sector.

?Despite billions of dollars allocated to the rehabilitation of Nigeria?s refineries, there are zero operational refineries today. The economic repercussions of this mismanagement are devastating,? he said .

?As of September 2024, Nigeria?s inflation rate has surged to 24.5 per cent an overwhelming strain on the daily lives of Nigerians.

?In the same period, fuel prices have increased by over 150 per cent, placing an even heavier burden on citizens who are already struggling with high costs of living.? (The Guardian)
